Monumental 104-Inch Mid-19th Century French Hand-Hewn Wood Trough Planter, 1850s

$2,560.00

A monumental French hand-hewn wooden agricultural trough dating to the mid-19th century, circa 1850. Measuring an exceptional 104 inches in length, this substantial vessel was hollowed from a single massive timber, retaining the irregular contours, tool marks and sculptural character associated with traditional French rural craftsmanship.

Known in France as an auge, troughs of this type were practical fixtures of 19th-century farm life and were used for feeding or watering livestock. The extraordinary length of this example distinguishes it from the considerably smaller surviving troughs more commonly encountered today.

More than 170 years of exposure and use have created a richly textured silver-gray to charcoal patina. Deep grain, worn edges, natural checking, losses and irregularities remain visible throughout, giving the piece an almost architectural presence. Iron supports beneath the trough elevate the vessel and allow it to function particularly well today as a monumental garden planter or landscape element.

Its elongated proportions make it especially effective along a garden wall, terrace, courtyard, entry or covered loggia, planted with herbs, grasses, succulents or trailing greenery. Equally compelling without planting, it reads as a large-scale piece of French folk art or sculptural architectural salvage.

France, circa 1850.
