Commonly referred to as the “Paper Bag” series, these iconic forms exemplify Wirkkala’s mastery of transforming everyday objects into refined works of modern art. The design captures the ephemeral look of crumpled paper bags rendered permanently in ceramic, blurring the line between functional vessel and sculptural object.

Each vase features a crisp rectangular opening contrasted by dramatically folded and compressed sides, giving the impression of soft material frozen in motion. The surfaces are intentionally irregular, with deep creases and organic contours that create visual depth and shadow. Executed in a warm terracotta-toned ceramic with a natural matte finish, the pieces display subtle tonal variation consistent with studio-quality production of the period.

These pieces align beautifully with Scandinavian modern, brutalist, minimalist, and wabi-sabi interiors, making them highly desirable for collectors, designers, and modern art enthusiasts. Whether used to display dried botanicals or appreciated purely as sculptural forms, this set embodies the innovative spirit and timeless elegance associated with Tapio Wirkkala’s work for Rosenthal.

Measurements:

7 1/2" H x 5 1/8" W x 3 3/4" D

6 1/4" H x 4 1/4" W x 3 1/8" D

4 1/8" H x 3 3/8" W x 2 3/8" D.

Condition: Item is consistent with vintage use.
